DESCRIPTION:\nJoin the monthly CDI book club presented by Cross-Cultural Connections. This month we will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage month by reading Crooked Plow by Itamar Vieira Junior\, translated from Portuguese into English by Johnny Lorenz. Please contact pendley@wustl.edu to receive a copy!\n\n\n\nAbout Crooked Plow: Deep in Brazil's neglected Bahia hinterland\, two sisters find an ancient knife beneath their grandmother's bed and\, momentarily mystified by its power\, decide to taste its metal. The shuddering violence that follows marks their lives and binds them together forever.\n\n\n\nHeralded as a new masterpiece and the most important Brazilian novel of this century\, this fascinating and gripping story about the lives of subsistence farmers in the Brazil's poorest region\, three generations after the abolition of slavery in that country is at once fantastic and realist\, covering themes of family\, spirituality\, slavery and its aftermath and political struggle.\n

To join and receive a copy of the book\, please contact pendey@wustl.edu\n\n\n\nAbout Queer as All Get Out: This graphic novel paints a picture of the lives of 10 specific LGBTQIA people from history\, framed by the personal struggles of the author to find acceptance and to carve out a meaningful life as a genderqueer person. Each chapter focuses on a different relatively little-known historical character\, presented within the context of the author’s own life. DESCRIPTION:\nJoin the CDI's monthly book club presented by Cross-Cultural Connections. This month we will be celebrating Native and Indigenous Heritage Month by reading Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger. Please contact pendley@wustl.edu to receive a copy!\n\n\n\nAbout Elatsoe: Imagine an America very similar to our own. It's got homework\, best friends\, and pistachio ice cream.\n\n\n\nThere are some differences. This America has been shaped dramatically by the magic\, monsters\, knowledge\, and legends of its peoples\, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday\, like the ability to make an orb of light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day.\n\n\n\nElatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals\, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. The picture-perfect facade of Willowbee masks gruesome secrets\, and she will rely on her wits\, skills\, and friends to tear off the mask and protect her family.\n\n\n\nConnection to NACE Competencies:\n\n\n\nSample Behaviors\n\n\n\n\nCritical Thinking #2\n\n\n\nTeamwork #1\n\n\n\nCommunication #1\n\n\n\nCareer & Self-Development #8\n\n\n\nProfessionalism #3\n\n\n\n\nProgram Goals: The Center for Diversity and Inclusion’s book club\, sponsored by Cross-Cultural Connections\, highlights books by a diverse array of authors. Our goal is for students to use book club as a way to understand the importance of and demonstrate verbal\, written\, and non-verbal/body language abilities. Our book club leaders also provide information from a diverse set of sources and individuals about the author\, culture\, and themes represented. The person is genderless\, racially ambiguous\, and refuses to speak. One family takes the strange visitor in and nicknames them Pew.  As the town spends the week preparing for a mysterious Forgiveness Festival\, Pew is shuttled from one household to the next. The earnest and seemingly well-meaning townspeople see conflicting identities in Pew\, and many confess their fears and secrets to them in one-sided conversations. Pew listens and observes while experiencing brief flashes of past lives or clues about their origins. As days pass\, the void around Pew’s presence begins to unnerve the community\, whose generosity erodes into menace and suspicion. Yet by the time Pew’s story reaches a shattering and unsettling climax at the Forgiveness Festival\, the secret of their true nature—as a devil or an angel or something else entirely—is dwarfed by even larger truths.  Pew\, Catherine Lacey’s third novel\, is a foreboding\, provocative\, and amorphous fable about the world today: its contradictions\, its flimsy morality\, and the limits of judging others based on their appearance. With precision and restraint\, one of our most beloved and boundary-pushing writers holds up a mirror to her characters’ true selves\, revealing something about forgiveness\, perception\, and the faulty tools society uses to categorize human complexity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Dancing at Church\, with his parents and brother\, the shimmer of Black hands raised in praise\; he might have lost his faith\, but he does believe in rhythm. Dancing with his friends\, somewhere in a basement with the drums about to drop\, while the DJ spins garage cuts. Dancing with his band\, making music which speaks not just to the hardships of their lives\, but the joys too. Dancing with his best friend Adeline\, two-stepping around the living room\, crooning and grooving\, so close their heads might touch. Dancing alone\, at home\, to his father's records\, uncovering parts of a man he has never truly known.  Stephen has only ever known himself in song. But what becomes of him when the music fades? When his father begins to speak of shame and sacrifice\, when his home is no longer his own? How will he find space for himself: a place where he can feel beautiful\, a place he might feel free?  Set over the course of three summers in Stephen's life\, from London to Ghana and back again\, Small Worlds is an exhilarating and expansive novel about the worlds we build for ourselves\, the worlds we live\, dance and love within. \n\n\n\n\n

The orphaned O'Leary siblings - Tom\, Jack\, Anna and Peggy - arrive in the village of Ballycrea\, tight-lipped about their troubled past and desperate for a fresh start.  After being met with suspicion from most of the locals\, the family are thrilled when they're taken under the wing of their well-respected neighbours\, Bill and Betty Nevan\, who offer them work\, companionship and an opportunity to fit in.  But for one of the O'Learys\, this new friendship sparks an intense attachment that makes the dynamic dangerous for all. It's difficult to bury secrets\, but almost impossible to bury feelings...  Crackling with suspense\, Heap Earth Upon It revisits the rural Ireland of Howarth's critically acclaimed debut and delves into claustrophobic relationships and tangled identities\, leaving you wondering who to trust until the very last page. It combines the emotional intensity and slow-burn sapphic obsession of Julia Armfield's Our Wives Under the Sea and K. Patrick's Mrs S. with the unsettling gothic undertones of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca and Shirley Jackson's fiction. \n\n

Determined to not let her rape derail the life she’d worked so hard to create\, she opted for her rape kit to be filed under Jane Doe\, knowing that an active court case tied to her name could hurt her odds of working for NASA after graduation\, a goal she’d been working toward for years.  But she was shocked to learn this choice meant she had only six months to take action before the state of Massachusetts destroyed her kit\, rendering any future legal action impossible. Nguyen knew then that she had two options: surrender to a law that effectively denied her justice\, or fight for a change—not only for herself but for survivors everywhere.  A deeply affecting memoir of grief\, survival\, and hope\, Saving Five details Nguyen’s winding journey of recovery and action\, which ultimately led her to create the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights\, one of the only unanimously passed laws in the history of the United States. Both a tribute to resilience and a lesson on healing\, Saving Five is an inspirational story for the ages. \n\n\n\n\n\n
